Description:

A handmade serving bowl cut from a single reclaimed coconut shell. Niulife's bowls are made by small coastal villages in the Solomon Islands from the shells left over after the flesh has been pressed into the company's extra virgin coconut oil - a genuine zero-waste by-product of the oil business rather than a separately farmed material.

This is the natural finish: the outside is left rough and unsanded so the shell's own grain and fibre show, while the inside is sanded and polished smooth for eating from. The only finish used is coconut oil itself, applied to hydrate the shell and bring up the shine - no lacquers, glues or chemical coatings.

Use it for smoothie and acai bowls, muesli, salads, poke, dips, snacks, or as a bathroom or desk catch-all. Bowls run roughly 12-14cm across and around 600mL capacity, though as each is cut from a different nut, size, shape and colour vary and minor imperfections are part of the character.

Care is simple but specific: hand wash in lukewarm soapy water only, do not soak, and keep it out of the dishwasher, microwave, oven and freezer. Avoid piping-hot foods, and re-oil with a little extra virgin coconut oil roughly every ten uses to stop the shell drying out.
